The snow wasn’t going to stop us from getting work done today!
We had a mini tech rehearsal at Shofuso to work out some logistics
as well as figuring out stage set up. Don’t worry, we warmed right back up again
as soon as we went back over to Settlement Music School and started playing again! March 11th, 2013 Philadelphia, PA
In January, we had performed at Wayne Elementary School as part of their Japan week.
We recently received some letters from the students who were in attendance.
Here are a few of our favorites!
I'd just like to say thank you so much for coming to our little theater and filling it with beautiful swift arm movements and powerful energetic sound. You really made my day! What really intrigued me about your performance was your quick circular arm movements while the other arm was occupied by the drum. Something else I really liked about the drums was the nice way they complimented each other, it was eye catching along with ear catching, the perfect performing qualities. Your colorful exciting outfits looked beautiful on every one of you. The way they swooshed and swooped as your bodies moved was amazing.
--- Rachel
We really enjoyed your performance. It had a cathy tune. I liked how you allowed us to play the drums during lunch.
I also love the beat of the drums and how the sound is produced by banging on them.
Here is a joke. Why did the drummers cross the road, to get to the next performance.
--- Hashim
Your drum was so big. It looked like a hippo, and when you played the drum I just thought that the hippo was hurting my stomach.
--- Anh
I loved your performance. The sound of the immense drums creating shrilling waves was awesome! The thunderous drums rattling everyone's eardrums were so cool. It was like a stampede of rhinos running through my ears. And literally my teeth were vibrating since it was so loud. Plus the way you all did it flawlessly and on rhythm and on beat was remarkable.

Thanks again to Kaoru for his patience working with us on our PIFA performance. It was great getting to put the whole thing together this weekend. Thanks also to our guests from PIFA who came out to check on our progress and see what we’re about! January 29th, 2013 Wayne, PA

The students at Wayne Elementary excitedly spent the week touring Japan.... with out even leaving their school! The parents and teachers did a wonderful job bringing Japan to them! They learned about Japan, ate Japanese food, painted beautiful ink paintings, and of course played the taiko drums! The school was decorated with all kinds of treasures from Japanese culture, both traditional and modern. The Sogetsu Ikebana school donated some Japanese flower arrangements to the students to help complete the picture! Domo Arigatou Gozaimashita, Wayne Elementary! January 23rd, 2013 Wayne, PA

Practicing at the Kimmel Center for the PIFA press conference! Lots of dancing, lots of artists, lots of fun! November 10th, 2012 Philadelphia, PA

Dear friends,
I'm sorry I'm communicating so late, but this is how long it has taken me to navigate all my English and Spanish dictionaries looking for the words to describe how I feel after Healing Beats ;)
It was AMAZING!! And what a turn out!! It was a treat to share with you one of my biggest loves, drumming. I hope you felt as uplifted and energized as I still do a week later.
Thank you very much to all who worked so hard in making it happen, played and supported in person and from afar. I loved seeing all of you. I am drenched in gratitude, love and the healing energy you brought to the room.
Hugs and a very Happy Thanksgiving,
Ana November 2nd, 2012 Philadelphia, PA

We took a field trip over to the Philadelphia Art Museum this evening! In our most recent rehearsal with Kaoru Watanabe, we focused a lot on body movement. So when we heard that the Kuromori Kagura dancers from the Tohoku Region of Japan were coming, we thought we would take a little field trip for some observational study! September 29th, 2012, Philadelphia, PA

What a fantastic weekend at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden in Fairmount Park! Vinnie was teaching us how to make origami bunnies and boats and stars. There was a dango making workshop. There were tea ceremonies performed. And of course, the beautiful Moon Viewing Party complete with taiko drumming! We were so happy that the moon came out in the evening from behind its cloudy hiding place! Thank you, moon! September 23rd, 2012, Chester Springs, PA

We are sweaty, tired, and happy after our full concert at the West Pikeland Cultural Center in Chester Springs. The theater was beautiful, and we played against a background of natural wooded area and blue skies. How many audience members did it take to match the powerful voice of Kyodaiko member, Paul? Was five the answer? September 8th, 2012, Reading, PA

The powerful sounds of taiko weren’t too loud for this deceptively spry audience at Heritage of Green Hills retirement center in Reading, PA! We performed for them and taught them about taiko, and in turn, they played for us!!!
Southern Berks News wrote a lovely write up for this event which you can read here! August 25th, 2012, Philadelphia, PA

We had another rehearsal with Kaoru Watanabe today! We worked on cleaning the different sections of Hiraki we have learned. The highlight of this rehearsal was brainstorming so many different ideas for the rest of the project for April’s PIFA performance. All of the Kyodaiko members had so many fantastically creative ideas! We can’t wait to see what manifests for the project! June 24th, 2012 Washington, DC

The court yard of the National Geographic Museum was the cool place to hang in today’s heat! Kyodaiko set the tone for National Geographic’s “Samurai: The Warrior Transformed” exhibit in Washington, DC. June 19th, 2012 Philadelphia, PA

What happens when you combine a fun filled taiko group with a group of scientists who play seashells? Why only the coolest of malacology receptions, of course! The sound of our drums rattled even more than just the actual dinosaur bones mounted around the museum! June 15th, 2012 Philadelphia, PA

Students of Kyodaiko, both returning and new, got to show off their newfound taiko skills at the 3rd Annual Year End Recital! Lots of new repertoire was presented this year and students worked extra hard to pull off an energetic and clean performance! Many thanks to everyone for their super hard work and special thanks to the following people: June for providing the fun backdrop, Therese for keeping everyone organized, Art and Tom for keeping our equipment in check, and Tamiko for outfitting our costumes.
June 6th, 2012 Philadelphia, PA

The booming sound of the drums echoed off the walls in the courtyard of Philadelphia’s City Hall. Kyo Daiko shared the stage with Timbalona Y Su Bomba and Troupe Da-Da. Each group played their own set during the concert, but cross collaboration was inevitable as each groups’ rhythms moved the others to get up and dance! And if that was fun enough, how about Ana’s epic bachi break on the very last note of the whole concert, giving way to her new nickname: Ana the Bachi Bain!
June 5th, 2012 Wynnewood, PA

There’s nothing quite like a few good kiai and hand clapping activities to wake up a group of sleepy 5th, 6th, and 7th graders!
Kyo Daiko took the stage at Friend’s Central to help educate students about Japanese Culture for their Diversity Day. May 24th, 2012 Downingtown, PA
The students of Downingtown High School celebrated diversity at their school today. They have chosen to help represent Japan through the use of taiko drumming! Kyodaiko had the privilege to both perform and teach today to wonderfully enthusiastic students! Many thanks to Kyodaiko member, Tom, for coordinating the event. Also, many thanks to one of Kyodaiko’s newest members, Zola, for providing such wonderful pictures!
NOW EVERYONE QUIET!!!! THIS IS A LIBRARY!!!!!
May 12th, 2012 Oaks, PA

Another fun “Mufti” gig, as Therese calls them. We had a great time playing taiko, dancing, and chanting. As always, with these types of events, its difficult not to get lost in a sea of anime characters! Who is your favorite? April 15th, 2012, Philadelphia, PA

We couldn’t have picked a more beautiful day for a festival! The sun was out. It was warm. The spring flowers smelled so sweet. And there were SOOOO many people! We didn’t play today, but we got to enjoy our home’s Cherry Blossom Festival. There was great food, fantastic entertainment (featuring Tamagawa Taiko), and plenty of festivities. Picnics dotted the lawn of the horticultural center as we put up our feet and relaxed.... almost. We spent the day meeting new faces (and reconnecting with familiar ones... HI TIM!!!). If you saw us on Sakura Sunday, it was a pleasure to meet you and we hope to see you again soon!!! April 14th, 2012, Philadelphia, PA

So many Cherry Blossom Festivals, so little time! We are so lucky to be invited to so many! Today we celebrated the beautiful sakura blossoms at the beautiful Morris Arboretum! Who are those cuties in this tree??? April 3rd, 2012, Philadelphia, PA
Many thanks to Maz and Jen from Taiko Project, for coming out and helping us build “our taiko vocabulary.” We learned exercises to give us more options for movement and learned how to build rhythms. We can’t wait to apply our new ideas to some improvised solos!
March 31st, 2012, Washington, DC

After our morning at the Horticultural Center, we packed up the drums in the van and headed on down to our nation’s capitol! Unfortunately, the absurdly warm weather caused the blossoms to bloom early this year. But there were still some left to appreciate throughout the city. Once again, the sound of taiko drums chased away the cloudy sky just long enough for a fun filled performance, including the debut of our director, Kris’s, new arrangement of a piece taught to us by Kenny Endo! We were very excited to share our new favorite piece with everyone. March 31st, 2012, Philadelphia, PA

KyoDaiko chased the rain away on the chilly morning of the Sakura Pavilion Grand Opening in Fairmount Park. Onlookers had a chance to try the drums, including the littlest (and hands down cutest!) member of the audience - a little boy, all dressed up in his own little happi coat. The opening of the Sakura Pavilion is a huge moment in the history of the Shofuso Japanese House & Garden, so we were so excited to be able to be a part of it all. March 22nd, 2012, Philadelphia, PA

School assemblies are always fun, but they’re even better when you get feedback from the kids! This particular group of preschoolers drew us pictures and wrote us letters about what they liked about the taiko drums! Here are some of their comments:
- A drum with a shark with to play with it.
- My favorite part was the drums. the drums were awesome.
- My favorite part was when the teachers were dancing.
- My favorite part was the drummer. I want to give a flowers to her.
- They drummed "Boom Boom" and they had funny black super Ninja shoes. " Ha-ha" "Sore-sore" they danced.
- "Oh, they loud!" They play music.
- They help each other, they shout to each other and bend!
- They play because they are happy when they play. February 17th, 2012, Philadelphia, PA

Kyo Daiko had a lot of fun filming for a segment on NBC’s The 10 Show! The topic of the segment was Alternate Forms of Fitness. They were exploring ways to get some exercise while having too much fun to realize how much of a work out you are getting. Sounds like taiko certainly fits the bill! Between the cardio and isometrics, you are building up strength and stamina, but having so much fun playing the music, that you don’t even realize how much work your body is putting into it! After the filming, Stacey Stauffer, the reporter, stayed for a bit and let director Kris Rudzinski teach her some taiko. Her and Kris jammed for a bit while Kyo Daiko members watched, clapped, and cheered her on!
To view the segment aired on Feb. 17th, click here! February 3rd, 2012, Plymouth Meeting, PA

Oni wa~ soto! Fuku wa~ uchi!
The young students at Plymouth Meeting Friends School have been learning about Asian cultures. They greeted us “Konnichiwa~” and showed us the origami Oni they made for Setsubun! Some students were mimicking our motions as we played through our pieces and they LOVED participating with Kiai! You could feel their voices echo in the auditorium. January 31st, 2012, Villanova, PA

A surprising DON from the drum woke up the approximate 200 audience members at today’s book signing event. A few people in the front row ended up moving back a few rows! Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is Jamie Ford’s debut as an author. Playing taiko at this event helped bring to life the representation of Japanese Americans in the book. To learn more about Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, visit Jamie Ford’s website. January 8th, 2012, Philadelphia, PA
This year, at one of our favorite events of the year, we welcomed the Year of the Dragon! The usual events were in place for the entertainment including a chorale, our Lion Dancer friend, and a children’s choir. The food was fantastic as always. There was sake tasting, and even takoyaki tasting! Every time Kyo Daiko member, Audrey, went to taste the takoyaki, it was all eaten! So popular! But thanks to fellow taiko member, Kazumi, Audrey managed to finally savor the super tasty takoyaki!
January 7th, 2012, Sewell, NJ

Edward Elrich, Light Yagami, and Vash were among the many celebrities in attendance at today’s performance. That’s right, it’s another anime convention! We couldn’t resist the temptation to join in with the cosplay while guests celebrated modern japanese culture. There were screenings of recommended shows, light saber demonstrations, and of course a bustling market place filled with paraphernalia from fan’s favorite animes. January 7th, 2012, Moorestown, NJ
Members of the Japanese American Citizen’s League gathered at Moorestown Friends School to help ring in the new year. A lovely spread of delicious japanese cuisine was served as people participated in activities such as chinese auctions, live auctions, and a taiko workshop! The guests broke into three groups, and some learned how to drum, some learned a dance, and some learned to sing a song. Don’t worry... the singing wasn’t performed while the singers were still eating.
January 2nd, 2012, Philadelphia, PA

Taiko was among many art forms performing on this day to celebrate the re-inauguration of Philadelphia’s Mayor Nutter. Each performance was also representative of the many cultures that are flourishing here in our home city of Philadelphia. Even the atmosphere was spectacular both on and off the stage thanks to the fantastic decor and lighting! November 20th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

KyoDaiko was privileged to share the stage with Unidos da Filadelfia! Together, we produced 3 hours of powerful music! Exerting all of that energy for the performance didn’t stop us from getting up to dance when our Brazilian Samba friends took the stage! November 18th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

KyoDaiko represented Japanese culture at the AARP multicultural ball. There was food and entertainment representing cultures from all around the globe! There were African dancers and drummers, Filipino coconut dancers, Korean fan dancers, a Mariachi band, and much much more! Guests were dressed in their best representing their homelands. It was such a beautiful, energetic, and fun evening! November 12th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

It was a perfect Autumn day as Kyo Daiko performed along the route of WHYY’s Y12K race in Fairmount Park this Saturday. The racing beat of the drums helped the hearts of the runners to keep going, and with gusto! The race helps to fund the award winning public programming of WHYY, as well as community outreach. September 24th, 2011, Phoenixville, PA

Kyo Daiko kicked off the TEDx event by waking the audience up with some heart pounding entertainment! Speakers presented on a variety of topics, from how the brain makes labels and connections, to education in urban areas. There were even some robots that played soccer! We were honored to part of such an engaging event! September 18th, 2011, Chester Springs, PA

Kyo Daiko had the pleasure of playing a full concert for West Pikeland’s Community Day. The audience was on the edge of their seats, feeling emotions ranging from excitement during Hashiru to calm and curiosity during the quiet and mysterious Sakura Sakura. After the concert, audience members were able to come up and try their hands at pounding the drums. September 17th, 2011, Downingtown, PA

Fasten your seat belts! It’s gonna be a wild ride! Kyo Daiko performed a halftime show for some of the roughest and toughest ladies around! And lucky for us, our performance managed to be even louder than our special roller derby costumes! The girls warmed up around us on the track, pumped up by the energy flowing from the drums. And it payed off, too! The home team was the winning team! September 17th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

Today we were invited to Mastery Charter School Shoemaker Branch’s block party! The smell of hot dogs and burgers filled the air while the community filled the street. There was a DJ, a choir, a martial arts demonstration, and of course, TAIKO! Between performances, everyone got together and danced in the street! September 3rd, 2011, Philadelphia, PA
The Saturday Concert for the WHYY Connections festival was a hit as Kyo Daiko opened the show! Participating in the concert was Toy Soldiers, Birdie Busch, Kuf Knotz, R. Eric Thomas, The Baseball Project, Justin Townes Earle, and Dr. Dog.
August 19th, 2011, Stanford, CA

What a week!!! Kyo Daiko spent the week learning all kinds of amazing new things at the 2011 North American Taiko Conference held at Stanford University in California! That’s right! Kyo Daiko’s first ever road trip! We met all kinds of amazing supportive taiko players from all over the world! It was so much fun learning everything from how to tune a shime rope drum, to new dances, and new styles of taiko! Kyo Daiko was completely honored to be able to play at Friday night’s Taiko Ten concert! You can see our performance here. There was even a group called Kagemusha that came all the way from the UK! How exciting it was to share the stage with so many talented taiko players! There was even an amazing taiko playing Gorilla! The last evening, everyone was blown away by an incredibly energetic performance at the Taiko Jam concert, featuring the Kenny Endo taiko ensemble, Inochi Taiko, Mirai Daiko, Soh Daiko, and the San Francisco Taiko Dojo. This is a trip that we will never forget, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve learned with everyone! August 6th, 2011, Harrisburg, PA

The Blue Mountain Lotus Society held their Obon Festival today at Tonboji Temple, and we were invited to participate. Obon is a traditional summer festival to honor our ancestors and those that have passed on before us. It is celebrated all over Japan with barbeques, taiko druming, and traditional folk dancing (Obon circle dances.) Because of the rain, the liturgy and lighting of the lanterns were held indoors. However, we lucked out and the rain subsided. We were then able to let the lanterns set sail! July 8th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

Kyo Daiko performed at a ceremony in which Mayor Nutter gave $230K raised for the Japanese Red Cross Society for relief aid consequential to the March Earthquake and Tsunami. Ambassador Shigeyuki Hiroki, Consul General of Japan in New York, was also in attendance this evening, as well as Japanese consulate officials such as Consul General Dennis Morikawa, and members of local Japanese cultural organizations. Funds were raised by local Japanese cultural organizations, known as the J7, as well as Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, Starr Restaurants, and Freeman’s Auction House.
June 29th, 2011, Sendai City, Japan

Therese flew to Japan to personally deliver the Disaster Relief Funds raised by Kyo Daiko and the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden. Sendai is considered Philadelphia’s sister city, and the earthquake and resulting tsunami that ravaged the Sendai area tugged at our heart strings. We wish all of those affected by the disaster a swift recovery. June 25th, 2011, Shamong, NJ

It was a quiet, peaceful place to play taiko. We felt a special connection because Shofuso (our house in Philadelphia) means Pine Wind Villa, like the Pine Wind Zen Center. There were about 50 guests.
Congratulations to the new priestess Rev. Dr. Bankei Nora Declassis! She even joined in for some kiai! After our taiko performance, there were Taichi and Karate demonstrations. The Taichi instructor said he had a difficult time calming his energy after he saw our taiko performance! Maybe he absorbed too much kiai energy! The demonstrations were fascinating to watch.
June 11th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

Kyo Daiko feels privileged to have worked with young performers from School of the Future. A collaborative effort between their drum line and our taiko ensemble produced a fun, upbeat, performance. Kyo Daiko members played and danced while the drum line played along together in a rhythmic harmony that energized the audience. June 4th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

Kyo Daiko performed on Shofuso’s veranda as Spectacle Gala guests looked on from the garden. A little later in the party, drummers got party-goers to step up and try the drum. They all loved it, getting satisfaction from improvising their own rhythm on the big drum. Then all the Kyo Daiko performers gathered around for one truly fun and spontaneous one drum jam! June 4th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA
Approximately 20 people came out today to participate in an open house workshop. Children and adults alike were able to get a taste of what playing taiko feels like! People from as far away as Maryland were in attendance!
June 3rd, 2011, Willow Grove, PA
This was an exciting night for Kyo Daiko. We demonstrated the pieces that we have been working on all year. Two new pieces were premiered as well! We played a taiko adaptation of a traditional African piece, and premiered an original composition by our director, Kris Rudzinski. The beginner’s class stepped up to the plate with two pieces they had been working on. It was a job well done. Congrats to them for their first public performance! Not only was it an exciting evening of drum performances, but we also raised $763 for Japan’s disaster relief. The funds were distributed between two organizations: The Philadelphia Japan Disaster Relief Fund and The Disaster Victim’s Relief Account of the Social Welfare Division of the Miyagi Prefectural Government in Sendai City. Thank you so very much to all who contributed. Arigatou gozaimasu.
May 21st, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

Adorable children dancing and doing karate can be a tough act to follow, but a quartet of Kyo Daiko ladies managed to pull it off at the Asian and Pacific Heritage Festival in Franklin Square. Our reward was a spicy Korean bulgogi lunch from Philly’s #1 Korean food truck, while we watched the other groups perform. This year’s festival included a rather large number of traditional Asian drum dances. We may have to step up our game! May 2nd-4th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

Kyo Daiko visited the Horticultural Center to perform for a sea of attentive children. This event was hosted by our affiliate, the Shofuso Japanese House. For three days, Shofuso hosted a series of Children’s Days where they were able to learn about Japanese Culture. April 30th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

The Avenue of the Arts was transformed into a street fair today with artwork, performances galore, and tons of food! This major event was part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts. Kyo Daiko performed in front of the Kimmel Center in the middle of a crowded street. Someone tried to leave a tip (as is common to do for street performers). However, Kyo Daiko is not used to this sort of venue and one member thought “Oh no! He dropped his money!” April 29th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

We had a blast at the Phillies game this evening! The Phillies were celebrating Asian Heritage Month so Kyo Daiko was invited to perform on the field. PJ, from San Jose Taiko, even joined us for the game!!! We missed Dollar Dog Night this year, but it was worth it when we saw Ryan Howard hit that Grand Slam!!! GO PHILS! April 23rd, 2011, Narberth, PA
PJ from San Jose Taiko came out to help us improve our taiko skills. She wanted to try a new workshop. In her words “it involves matsuri-esque spirit --- to uplift players and audience (movement, catchy ji, kakegoe, endless polyrhythmic possibilities).”
Thank you, PJ, for visiting us! Also, a special thanks to Pastor Lydia for allowing us to rehearse at United Methodist Church in Narberth.
April 2nd, 2011, Narberth, PA

Today we were street performers! Maido, the home of some very delicious japanese foods, had invited us to play some tasty rhythms at a food tasting event. Children and “Inner-children” alike got to try their hands at playing taiko, as well! It was a fun family day. March 26th, 2011, Washington, DC

Kyo Daiko took a road trip to Washington, DC this weekend to perform for the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Many MANY thanks to Sue and Kate (the stage managers) for making the magic happen. The cherry blossoms were absolutely beautiful in the sunlight. And even though it was VERY cold out, we kept warm from the energy created by our drumming! What a fun and exciting day! March 25th, 2011, Rosemont, PA
The 7th graders at Rosemont School of the Holy Child were learning about Japan in their classes, and their creative teachers decided to immerse them in some Japanese culture! The students spent many hours today learning to drum taiko style, chanting a song, and learning a dance! At the end of the day, they put on a performance for an audience of very curious 1st graders.
March 18th, 2011 Tokyo, Japan

Message from Kyo Daiko member, Tamiko.
Dear Taiko Friends,
My friend in Tokyo, Hachijo Taiko “Hanamizuki (Dogwood)” run by Kanako and Terutami Yokoi, sent us omiyage from Hachijo Island last Saturday, including the kimono cookies I brought to practice tonight. I appreciate their thoughtfulness at this difficult time in Japan. I hope that they can all return to normal lives soon.

Sumimasen, will this be on the exam? Kyo Daiko presented a taiko challenge to the students and teachers participating in Nihongo Philacon, a Japanese language convention. The students cheered their teachers on as they stepped up to the challenges given to them by the local taiko ensemble! During a Q&A, a student asked about our red hachimaki. Tamiko responded that the red color is believed to protect us from evil and demonic spirits, and also represents success, value, and victory. And coincidentally, we are also Phillies fans! February 5th, 2011, Lancaster, PA

Kyo Daiko put the BEAT in heartbeat at the American Heart Association of Lancaster’s Heartbeat of the Dragon gala on February 5th. Fueled by chili and cheese tater tots from Sonic and lots of road trip laughs, June, Cathi, Ana, and Therese wowed the good-looking crowd at the Lancaster Country Club. Big thanks to our one-man road trip pit crew, Tim Desmond, for hooking us up with a nice clean truck and plenty of water for our little journey out west! February 2nd, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

Kyo Daiko pulled back on the gears a little bit this evening to stop for a maintenance night. Fixing stands, re-taping practice tires, sanding bachi, and more replaced the usual rehearsing and practicing. Not only is getting together and bonding over the care of your equipment a great team building experience, it tastes great too! That is, thanks to all who participated in the pot luck dinner that was provided for everyone this evening. Mmmmm.... takoyaki!

January 16th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

The Please Touch Museum at Fairmount Park was the place to be on January 16th. It is a special place where curious kids are allowed to get up close and personal with a variety of different subjects. Today’s special subject was drumming! The children got to experience the feel and the sounds of taiko drums with the help of Kyo Daiko. The group also performed two mini concerts throughout the day. January 15th, 2011, Sewell, NJ
Once again, Kyo Daiko drummed up some excitement, this time for quite an array of characters! It was Gloucester County College’s KOTORICON! This event celebrates an appreciation for japanese styled cartoons, called “anime”. The enthusiastic attendees participated in the entertainment, spontaneously turning the piece Eijanaika into a jam session that everyone could be involved in! It was quite a surprise to Kyo Daiko, but a VERY pleasant and exciting one!
January 9th, 2011, Philadelphia, PA

Finally, an excuse to give people bunny ears! We are celebrating the year of the rabbit. What better way to ring in the new year than with taiko drumming?! Kyo Daiko made yet another appearance at one of our favorite venues of the year, the Japanese Associate of Greater Philadelphia’s New Year’s Party! Motchi, sake, and this year, even some takoyaki filled people’s bellies while people celebrated the New Year in all sorts of ways. Children had their faces painted like bunnies, the Lion dancer blessed everyone, and people tested their new good fortune by participating in a raffle. Speaking of which, super congratulations to KyoDaiko performer, Cathi, who won the grand prize: a round trip to Japan! Have a great New Year everyone!

Congratulations!
Kris and Loretta Rudzinski on the birth of their son, Noah Henry Rudzinski, on Nov. 26th!
Audrey Tuckerman on becoming an official Settlement Music School faculty member to be able to assist Kris as KyoDaiko’s substitute sensei!
KyoDaiko for year of incredible accomplishments!
New things!
New Website!!!

Thanks to Whiteboard Media’s Jacob Smith for getting Audrey set up to take over KyoDaiko’s website. Audrey’s redesign looks incredible and allows KyoDaiko to make frequent updates to keep our fans informed. It has also apparently even attracted attention from overseas! For this we say to both Jacob and Audrey... DOMO!
New T-Shirts!!!

Special thanks to Mr. Laincz (Tamiko’s talented Father-in-law) for our awesome new t-shirt design! And big thanks to Tamiko for getting the shirts turned around in time for us to debut them at the Wawa Welcome America Taste of Philly performance on June 25th! We’re looking good, KyoDaiko!!!
Workshops!

PJ and Franco of San Jose Taiko taught a fantastic workshop, teaching us how to release our ki! We did a lot of really fun activities that helped bring the group closer together and make us more aware of our bodies and the relationship between our bodies, the drum, and each other. Best of all, we learned Eijanaika, a piece that we debuted at our Spring Recital!

Kaoru Watanabe gave us our first taste of playing the fue, then taught a marathon 4-hour workshop, including warm ups, how to feel the balance of our bodies, and some history behind taiko songs commonly played in by American taiko groups. But the main focus of the workshop was about playing Miyake, Kodo-style. It was a hard workout, but every minute was worth it!

After giving his time at South Philly High School during the day, Kenny, along with his wife, Chizuko, taught KyoDaiko a great workshop, showing us proper hitting technique, about the space between us and the drum, the space between notes, and much more. And if that weren’t enough, he taught us two pieces, including one on the Odaiko, introducing the group to proper odaiko technique.
To All of You:
Domo Arigato Gozaimashita!!!
2010 Year-End Numbers:
33 performances total
16 school or kids’ event programs
9 workshops given
3 workshops attended
1 professional taiko concert produced
1 collegiate group prepped for a Kimmel Center debut
And over 46,000 people saw KyoDaiko perform in 2010!!!!
Thank you, to all who attend our performances and show your support for us! We love sharing our passion and enthusiasm for taiko with you!
Have a very Happy New Year!!!
December 9th, 2010 Philadelphia, PA

A trio of Kyo Daiko members entertained the guests of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School Cultural Night. La Bateria, the school’s brazilian percussion ensemble, was also there to perform. There was quite a crowd packed into the room, trying to keep warm from the bitter cold outside. Once we could feel our fingers and toes again, we woke the room up with a brief but energetic and fun demonstration of taiko drumming! November 19th, 2010 Philadelphia, PA

It was such a privilege to have Kenny Endo and his ensemble perform here in Philadelphia. The amount of talent and energy blew away the audience. Miss Shoko Hikage was so graceful playing the Koto. Chizuko’s masterful agility was a beautiful compliment to the ensemble. Kaoru Watanabe enchanted the audience with his quick and nimble flute expertise. Tadayoshi Yasuda demonstrated his incredible shamisen skills. Hitoshi Hamada looked like he was having the most fun, forever smiling as he jammed on the vibraphone and other various percussion instruments. And finally, of course, Kenny Endo, the mastermind behind the whole concert was as masterful and powerful as ever. Thank you to everyone who helped make this concert a success. And a special thank you to those who came to watch the concert. It isn’t often we get someone of Kenny and his ensemble’s calibur here. It was a very special night for everyone. Wow, our arms are sore!!! What a great night! We worked on improvisation, and learned two new taiko pieces. Many of us learned to play the Odaiko (the Great Drum) for the very first time. We also learned a new way to play sukeroku style. Thank you so much to Kenny and Chizuko for all of your wisdom, patience, and chocolates!!! November 14th, 2010, Philadelphia, PA

Despite an unfortunate wave of sudden illness among the Kyo Daiko team, the show went on!!! We performed a concert as part of the University of Pennsylvania’s Japan Day. The events of this day were meant to teach people about many aspects of Japanese Culture, from traditional garments and food, to martial arts, and of course, taiko drumming! Within the concert, we performed two interactive activities for the audience. Two little boys were particularly enthusiastic about the kiai activity!!! Overall, it was a very busy, but VERY fun day! A small group of KyoDaiko drummers set up at Citizen’s Bank Park. We played to help encourage people to keep going on their 5K walk around the perimeter of the property. It was inspiring to see so many people there, supporting those dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease. Many groups would stop and rest for a moment while we gave little mini concerts for them. Our drumming, along with many other performing groups there that day, helped keep the walkers’ spirits up as they completed their walk.

KyoDaiko was so pleased to perform at Ithan Elementary School’s Multicultural Night on November 12th. Kids and parents alike got into the interactive program, shouting kiai and clapping along with the “ji.” The sushi and delicious cupcakes also made us happy, but it was the children’s adorable questions that made us smile the most! Kyo Daiko performed at the “Taking the Streets Fashion Show” in Germantown on Oct. 2nd. Performing during a break between catwalk shows of the latest designs for kids and adults, Kyo Daiko proved that rhythm is ALWAYS in fashion! August 10th-13th, 2010 Philadelphia, PA
August 10th through 13th, Kyo Daiko's Creative Director Kristopher Rudzinski spent 4 days working with 11 students at Shofuso Japanese and Garden. Over the span of the 4 days the students were introduced to taiko basics and learned an original composition which they

Kaoru Watanabe visited Philadelphia to play a concert at Shofuso, but was kind enough to teach a 5 hour marathon workshop to KyoDaiko members before his concert. It started with a small group lesson on the fue, which was KyoDaiko's first chance to learn fue. This was followed by a four hour session where Kaoru taught us some warm ups, how to feel the balance of our bodies, and some history behind taiko songs commonly played in by American taiko groups. But the main focus of the workshop was about playing Miyake, Kodo-style. We got down low, we played, we sweated, we played some more. It was a hard workout, but every minute was worth it. Thank you, Kaoru! August 5th, 2010 Philadelphia, PA

Tokyo Pop came today to video tape us playing taiko for their travel movie! We had a lot of fun! We set up on the veranda of the Shofuso Japanese House in front of the koi pond and played our version of Eisa/Beginnings. Then we gathered inside the house for a group interview. We feel like movie stars! August 5th, 2010 Philadelphia, PA
The theme for Shofuso’s third week of the children’s camp was Karate. Their Ki was already warmed up from their Karate instructor earlier in the day. To keep the energy up, the children learned the dance and the chant to Eijanaika, a piece which was taught to Kyo Daiko by members of San Jose Taiko.

Children returned for their second week of camp, celebrating different aspects of Japanese Culture. This week, the theme was Tea Ceremony. We enjoyed a slow, quiet day while sitting on the veranda of the Shofuso Japanese House. The children learned the lyrics to Sakura Sakura as a misty rain fell quietly outside.

Today was our first week working with the children at Shofuso’s summer children’s camp. Every year Shofuso holds these summer camps for kids to have fun while learning about different aspects of Japanese culture.

Philly knows how to throw a party and KyoDaiko was there on July 4th for the Wawa Welcome America Party on the Parkway. The Ben Franklin Parkway was blistering hot, but that didn't stop us from drumming our hearts out! KyoDaiko got the crowd involved with a couple of audience participation activities and nothing makes us smile more than seeing people really get into it!

The Penn's Landing crowd at the Wawa Welcome America Taste of Philly event on June 25 shouted, clapped and moved to KyoDaiko's groove. It was KyoDaiko's first try at a new interactive activity where we got the audience to clap the "ji" beat with us and this receptive group really got into it. KyoDaiko loves crowds like this - another reminder of why we LOVE this city of ours! June 20th, 2010 Philadelphia, PA
Nine taiko newbies joined the Introduction to Taiko Drumming Workshop taught by Kris Rudzinski, KyoDaiko Creative Director, on Sunday, June 20. Kris showed them the basics of handling the "bachi" drumsticks, stance and strike technique, then the group learned a brand new practice piece. It was truly a friends and family event with brother-sister, mother-daughter, mother-son pairs and friends signing up to learn together!
June 12th, 2010 Medford, NJ

KyoDaiko pulled double duty on June 12, leading workshops for campers in Medford and then doing two performances. This was all part of Camp FCC, a summer camp for families with children adopted from China. It was great fun, but REALLY hot, so the drummers cooled off with a stop at a Rita's Water Ice stand on the way home! June 5th, 2010 Philadelphia, PA
KyoDaiko was in the house for Settlement Music School’s Open House on Saturday, June 5. We played some pieces for a great audience, including one little 3 year old boy who has definitely got some taiko in his future! It was great sharing what we do with the Settlement community!
June 4th, 2010 Philadelphia, PA

Thank you to all three of Kyo Daiko’s classes for all of your hard work this year. There were new pieces, there were old pieces, and new twists on some old favorites! The room was full of energy as we showcased our work to our friends, family, and the public. Keep up the great work! We can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us! May 29th, 2010 Camden Aquarium, NJ
KyoDaiko performed at a wedding reception in Currents Ballroom at the Camden Aquarium on May 29. One wall of the ballroom looked in on a floor to ceiling shark tank. This was definitely the first time KyoDaiko has performed for sharks! The human guests seemed to enjoy the show as well!

After yesterday’s Ki workshop with San Jose taiko we were ready to unleash some stadium sized Ki! The Phillies were having an Asian Pacific heritage celebration and asked us to be a part of the show. We felt like super stars being “behind the scenes” at the game! We met the Philly Phanatic and even had our own locker room! It was exciting performing on the field and being up on the big screen! Hey, did we mention it was Dollar Dog night? May 2nd, 2010 Philadelphia, PA

Thanks so much to PJ and Franco of San Jose taiko for coming out and working with us! They taught us how to release our Ki! We did a lot of really fun activities that helped bring the group closer together and make us more aware of our bodies and the relationship between our bodies and drum. We even learned a new piece which we can’t wait to share with you! April 17th, 2010 Swarthmore, PA

KyoDaiko performed on Saturday, April 17 at The Creative Living Room in Swarthmore as part of their Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival. This family friendly event featured koto music, traditional Japanese “kamishibai” storytelling, origami, and of course, taiko! KyoDaiko performed pieces, talked to the children about the drums and how taiko drumming is used in Japanese festivals, then got the crowd to participate by shouting “kiai” with the performers. Curious future taiko drummers then stepped up to try their hand at playing the big drums! March 28th, 2010 Washington DC

Kyo Daiko was very excited to be invited to play at the Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival this year! We performed on a stage in front of the Washington Monument. The audience was relaxed on the lawn in front of us, enjoying the view of the beautiful cherry blossoms. Once we started playing, the crowd nearly tripled! It was a very exciting road trip for us and we can’t wait to be able to do it again!
